Filming has begun on the first episode of Sherlock Series Four in Cardiff, following a cast and crew read through in the city on the evening of Monday 4 April. The day before, Benedict Cumberbatch completed principal photography on Marvel's Doctor Strange, winging his way back from New York City to take part.

Directing the first episode to go before the cameras is Rachel Talalay. Rachel is the first female director of the series proper, following on from Coky Giedroyc who directed the original unaired pilot episode of Sherlock. Born in Chicago, Rachel has huge experience in directing shows in both the UK and USA, including instalments of Supernatural (2007), DC Comics' series The Flash & Legends of Tomorrow (both 2016), 4 episodes of Ally McBeal between 1999 and 2002, and the two part finales for both Series 8 and 9 of Doctor Who in 2014 and 2015. She is also famous for directing the cult classic Tank Girl (1995) - an R-Rated comic book movie from back before Deadpool (2016) made everyone think an R-Rated comic book movie was a new idea.

You can follow Rachel on Twitter at @rtalalay.

The untitled episode has been written by Mark Gatiss. In an official press release issued today by the BBC, the Mark and Steven Moffat promise "Ghosts of the past are rising in the lives of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson bringing adventure, romance and terror in their wake. This is the story we've been telling from the beginning. A story about to reach its climax..."

There is no officially announced airdate for the new series of Sherlock. However, if it follows the pattern of the previous two series and special episode The Abominable Bride, it will likely air on January 1 2017.

As usual, stay tuned to Sherlockology for all the latest spoiler-free news on the show as work progresses to bring it to our screens.
